Historic Winterset High school lofts

The Historic Winterset High School Lofts transformed a beloved community landmark into distinctive modern housing while preserving the character and craftsmanship of its historic past.

Originally constructed in 1921, the former Winterset High School was thoughtfully rehabilitated into 27 senior apartments in the heart of downtown Winterset. The $10 million adaptive-reuse project preserves significant architectural features throughout the building, including the original auditorium, wood floors, classroom windows, chalkboards, staircases, and historic details uncovered during construction.

Modern residences and amenities were carefully integrated into the existing structure, creating comfortable, contemporary homes while retaining the building’s unique sense of place and connection to the community.

The project demonstrates how thoughtful historic preservation can breathe new life into an iconic building—transforming an underutilized property into vibrant housing while honoring the history and heritage of Winterset.
